In today's blog you are to discuss in detail your findings regarding assistive technology; what was the most interesting, what was the most surprizing, what technology is most beneficial to users and why.
If you had to use the assistive technology that you researched, how would you feel? How could the technology help you in school, work and everyday life?
Discuss in DETAIL how other people would 'look' at someone using the assistive technology you researched. Are people frowned on, stared at, etc.

ReplyDeleteIn my research project I came across many remarkable ways to use assistive technology but one specifically caught my eye, the iPad system for the visually impaired. The way you can enlarge text and images along with hearing what something is written with just one touch amazes me. This system would come in handy for me if I was blind because you can access and do almost anything on it. It could help me research stuff for homework, look at pictures of my family, read, and so much more. As someone with good vision looking on this system for the blind I think they would see it as a more educational hands on experience because the user can control whatever they want along with assistance.

I think the most interesting assistive technology device that I researched is the Braille embosser. This device changes regular work into Braille when you print it out on the embosser, to allow blind people to read it. I think it’s amazing that such a simple device can do what it does, and it helps so many people who can’t see. I know that if I was blind, the Braille embosser would make my life so much easier because I’d still be able to read and write. If I had to use this device I would understand how it would feel to be blind, and that would be horrible. But it would still allow me to be in school and still do my schoolwork. If someone was in school using the device, they could possibly get made fun of, or called names by some people, but others could think it’s amazing that they’re still in school with their disability.

ReplyDeleteDuring my research project I found that all the technologies that I chose to be beneficial, the most beneficial I think would be most important is the cochlear implants to help the deaf or hearing impaired. The most surprising thing to me was how much the ipad which is a gaming system could help autistic kids communicate through. Definitely the most interesting one would be the I.D Mate made by Summit just because it is amazing to me that just by scanning any part of a box or tag it can tell you so many things such as what the product is, price, and even some nutrition facts about the item. To me, I personally try my best not to stare at the handicapped or disabled just because I know how uncomfortable that has to make them feel. However, I also know how despite that fact a lot of people do stare and talk about that individual rudely. If I was in that persons shoes I would try my best not to think about how people perceive me, but I know that I would be very insecure and self conscience on top of my disability. I also think, that even though it would be really hard to do everyday tasks by myself I know that I would want to be independent and doing things on my own so I wouldn’t feel as such a bother to others.
I think the most interesting piece of assistive technology that I found was the WordRead. I thought it was helpful because it reads out loud the words on the computer screen. If you missed part of it you could play back the whole page or just a small passage. One piece of technology that surprised me was the vibrating alarm clock. I did not know something like that existed. It makes a lot easier for the deaf to wake up on time. A device that I thought was most helpful was the talking calculator. For someone who is blind it isn’t easy for them to see the numbers and operators and the fact that it talks really helps out a lot. If I had to use some sort of assistive technology these devices would be extremely helpful. These devices definitely could help you in school when you needed them. For instance the talking calculator would be very helpful in math class. If I saw someone with assistive technology I wouldn’t think it was a big deal but I know most people would stare at them because they are “different.”
ReplyDeleteWhen I was researching 'assistive technology' the most interesting thing I found out was how many people actually have to use some sort of this technology. It was something like 20.6% of Americans. Its sad to think that there are that many people out there that have a disability. The most surprising thing that I found would have to be a robotic lower half or a robotic upper half. The robotic body is extremely complicated. It’s something like 1-5.5 million dollars to create the technology and then fit it to the correct specifications of the person. Whoever is going to use this stuff has to be quite knowledgeable, there are so many steps into making this thing run. It’s crazy, but it works! The most beneficial tool I saw out there would have to be either the iPad or computer like tools that help a person either learn skills, or to help in some sort of matter. Another very beneficial tool was the wheelchair and scooters. I see tons of people riding those things, and they look fun! If I had to use assistive technology I would feel left out and I would feel like a loser. I mean I don't want others to look down on me and think that I have special needs. I'm just the same as you are except I have to have a little help. But it does have its benefits as well. School work would be just at my level, not too high and not too low. It would make my life easier if It knew my exact needs. It would help me get the job done correctly and efficiently. People with disabilities are no different than you or me. They have the same needs, the same wants, but they have a barrier that they can't get over without the help of assistive technology.

Last week, I found all kinds of types of assistive technology that people use. The assistive technology that was the most surprising to me was Braille because the hearing impaired could move their fingers against the keys and know exactly what they are saying. I think that the most beneficial technology for people to use is probably the prosthetic limbs. Prosthetic limbs are important because without those people could not move around or do the things they do daily. If I had to use assistive technology I would feel like I was different from everyone else and that I would probably get made fun of. But on the bright side, assistive technology could help me hear, read, or write assignments in could and could help me walk around to do everything that people usually do without them. People in society tend to be cruel and rude to others. When people have something different or unusual about them, society tends to pick on them or assail them. Most of the things I see from people are when they at them and give them weird or different looks. I think everyone should be treated the same no matter what they have different about them.
In my research regarding Assistive Technologies I learned a lot of cool new information. The technology that I found the most surprising was the invention of prosthetic limbs. I never knew that we had a wide variety to choose from! The technology that I found to be the most interesting was the blinking alarm clock for the hearing impaired people. I thought it was interesting because I never realized that a certain type of light could wake up a sleeping person considering their eyes would be closed. I know for a fact that I probably wouldn’t be able to wake up to a blinking light! In my point of view the technology that is most beneficial to users in today’s world would have to be the use of prosthetic limbs. With the use of prosthetic limbs people without an arm or a leg are able to walk and or pick things up whereas without these assisting limbs they wouldn’t be able to. If you really think about it prosthetics are being made to look more and more like actual limbs therefore you don’t even notice if someone’s limb is real or fake. Of course, in the everyday life of an American if you come across someone with a prosthetic limb, or a disability, it’s normal to look but not stare (even though some people still do). I feel that we Americans don’t frown upon people that need help using assistive technologies because God obviously had some reason for them to be made or end up that way in which they can’t control. I know for a fact that people using assistive technology to get around or live a normal life get stared at quite often when they’re out in public. It does make you think to yourself though when you see someone else staring at one of your loved ones whether they are in a motorized scooter, or walking with a cane because you just want to look at them and say hey man, they’re a human being just like you, so STOP starring! Overall my research information about assistive technology really opened my eyes because I honestly never realized how important it is to people all around the world.

In my findings on assistive technology the most surprising thing I found was how the iPad has made such an impact on assistive technology and brought up new ideas for future designs. The iPad helps disabled kids and this plan wasn’t even for apples intentions. The most interesting thing I found was how advanced prosthetics have come along. Scientists are trying to create nerve like designs to put in the fakes as if the new technology would be totally functional and realistic. I would also have to say prosthetics are the most beneficial technology. They help a lot of people and make it possible to live a close to normal life again.
If I had to use an assistive technology that I researched such as a prosthetic, I would feel different and disadvantaged from everyone else. This technology would help me by making it easier to write again, giving me a greater self esteem, and not letting me not feel so much different and just give me the chance to live a normal daily life.
Other people usually look at disabled people with prosthetics as different and weird. In public places these people are stared at and watched as if they are odd. It’s not their fault something bad happened to them. They just try to live a normal life and have many more obstacles to get around.
I have researched assistive technology in the last couple days and what I find most interesting is the Albacmat. I find this surprising because it is like a personal evacuation mat. It’s easy to store in your own home for emergency purposes and it can hold heavier people than what I originally thought it would. If I had to use an assistive technology tool that I researched I would be devastated. It would be hard to get used to either having a prosthetic arm or leg, or having to use a hydraulic lift system to help get someone in and out of the bathtub, or if I had to use the Albacmat. If I did that means I had some kind of awful accident or someone else had one. These technologies would come in handy at school, home or even at work though. The prosthetic limb could make you feel more normal at school. At home it could help you walk or clean or other things around the house. At work having a prosthetic limb could allow you to perform better and do a better job than what you could have done without it. The Albacmat could help you or someone else survive no matter where you are. The Quicklift II would help you at home with your grandchildren or children. And if you work with small animals or with kids at a daycare then the Quicklift II would help you bathe them with less strain on your arms and back.

Assistive Technology
If I had to use the assistive technology I researched, it would be difficult learning it and getting used to it such as the prosthetic leg or arm. It’s such a change from what we are used to doing. If you were blind they have a pin board, you scan a book and the pins rise to the Braille pattern. If you had to read a book, and there was no audio version, that could help you a lot. It can also help you see pictures. The app for people with autism can make a big change; it helps you understand things more clearly and helps you put things together. When you are learning in school, you would improve a lot. These technologies must mean so much to people. To do something you never could before, that would make me so happy and proud of myself, imagine how those people feel that use assistive technology. When I see someone using assistive technology, I stare because it’s different, and I really don’t see people using those kinds of things. I think it’s cool that technology is growing and helping out so many people.

I researched prosthetic limbs and voice-assisted technology. How far prosthetic limbs have come is what amazed me the most. This is because they used to just be wooden stumps and now they can have moving fingers, toes, and movement of the whole limb. I think that both products are useful to users, but I believe that prosthetic limbs are the most beneficial. I say this because prosthetic limbs have helped people who have lost an entire arm, leg, foot, or hand, continue on with their everyday life.
If I had to use voice-assisted technology, like a screen reader, I would feel upset sometimes because of the disability, but I would feel happy that there was technology out there for me to use. This is because people who are blind can use computers with the help of a screen reader, and screen readers can deliver speeches for people who cannot talk. In work and school I could use this technology to help give oral reports, answer questions, and participate in class. If I had lost a limb and had to receive a prosthetic limb, I would feel grateful. This is because I would not have to worry about not being able to participate in certain things. In school I would be able to get to and from class without help, I would be able to participate in gym, and I would be able to do my writing assignments without help if I had a prosthetic arm. In work and everyday life I would be able to continue on just like I always did.
People who have to use prosthetic limbs are probably stared at, but at the same time are looked up to because they have overcome something as huge as losing a limb. People who have to use voice-assisted technology, like screen readers, are probably stared at or, frowned on, and people probably feel sorry for them. Some people also probably make fun of them for their disability. However I think that they are also looked up to because even though they have a disability, they are doing the best they can to overcome it.

I thought one of the most interesting things about assistive technology was that there are so many types of assistive technology that can affect so many people’s lives. It really does help a lot of people. One of the most surprising things about assistive technology was that a hearing aid can actually help a deaf person hear. I thought that when you are deaf there is no chance you will ever hear again, but assistive technology proved me wrong. It is hard to say which type of technology is most useful to users because not everyone has the same problem. I think I would have to say prosthetic limbs are most useful to people. This is because you can do a wide range of things with a prosthetic limb. Also, some people are born without legs and some people lose their legs.
If I had to use the assistive technology that I researched I wouldn’t feel embarrassed, but maybe helpless. I think I would want to do things on my own without the help of assistive technology, but I would realize that I really could use the help of assistive technology.
Another good thing about assistive technology is that a lot of it isn’t really noticeable. For example a hearing aid or prosthetic legs aren’t going to be spotted or noticed from far away. I think this is good for kids in High School and in public in general. Also my other 2 assistive technologies were webcams and iPads, and no one is going to look at a kid using an iPad and say “Oh, he looks funny…” So assistive technology can be helpful and go unnoticed at the same time, which makes it oh so useful.

ReplyDeleteWhen I first heard that we had to write a paper on Assistive Technology, I had no clue what it was. But then I later came to find out that assistive technology is something to help someone with a disability like being blind, being deaf, etc. Assistive technology really fascinates me because it can help someone through a problem they have with their body. I think the most interesting use of assistive technology is the TTY; the TTY is a text telephone. Or it can be named TTD for text telephone for the deaf. A reason why deaf people would use this is because they can visually see what the person is saying on a screen and they can type what they want to the other person they’re trying to communicate with. This is what the text telephone can be used for, deaf people or hard of hearing people usually use this. Since this device allows you to see what the people are saying through a phone and turn it into text, it is great use too deaf people so they can communicate. It amazes me how the phone can transfer one persons voice to another’s telephone in text.

ReplyDeleteAs I was gathering information about assistive technology, I realized just how important these devices are. Without these pieces of equipment disabled people and people with disadvantages could not function at the same skill level as people without them. The most interesting device that I came across was the cochlear implant. The cochlear implants are small, intricate electronic devices that can help to supply or improve the ability to hear sound for a person who is deaf or unable to hear. The implant is made up of a part that sits behind the ear and a second segment that is surgically implanted under the skin. An implant has a microphone, which picks up sound from the environment. This gadget acts like an ear so that people without the sense of sound are able to hear. The cochlear implant is most beneficial to users because it creates the allusion of sound for people without that capability. If I was not able to hear and I had to have a cochlear implant I would be grateful to have the opportunity to have the ability to hear because of it. Lastly, the cochlear implant is barely perceptible so hardly anyone would notice that it was there.
Some of the things that I thought were very surprising it was for color blind people and it was this handheld device that would tell the person what color it really was not what color they think it is. This device could also help people that could see for a while and then something terrible happened to them so they couldn’t see anymore. The technology that would be most useful would be the assisted breathing device. One of them for example is the mechanical ventilator. This machine helps people that can’t breathe one there own. Its machine pushes air into the lungs to help the person breathe. Without this machine many of these patients would die that is why this is the most beneficial.
ReplyDeleteIf I had any of these devices I would be very grateful that I could have some of these if I had a terrible accident. But if I had one of these I feel like people would stare at me and always come up to me and ask me what happened. I also think little kids would laugh at me for having one of these

Assistive technology is so helpful to so many people in the United States and anywhere else in the world. Assistive technology is several different things that help several different types of disabilities. Assistive technology is things from hearing aids and voice recognition software to prosthetic limbs and learning disabilities.
I thought that the prosthetics were most interesting because the options were endless. There were so many different types and styles that anyone could fit in even without an arm or leg. I thought the most surprising thing was that Apple devices had so many assistive technologies built right into their products, which allowed people to access them quickly and easily.
I feel like all assistive technology is equally beneficial. It depends on what the assistive technology is being used for. Someone with a loss of a leg would obviously benefit more from a wheelchair than a hearing aid, and someone with loss of hearing would rather have a hearing aid than a wheelchair. It all just depends on your personal disability and what would work best for you.
If I personally had to use assistive technology I think I would feel different from everyone else because you don’t see a lot of people that use it. After a while I think I would become used to it and everything would be okay but I would still feel that sort of separation from the crowd.
Assistive technology could help people with learning disabilities and make it easier for them to comprehend and understand what they learning. People who can’t see very well would obviously benefit in everyday life by using glasses or contacts.
People who use assistive technology, I think, are looked at differently from other people. Although in many cases that person can’t help that they have a disability, people don’t think of it that way and treat them differently. These people should not be treated differently and be stared at because of a disability that they probably had no control over. I think people do look down on people with assistive technology because they think they aren’t capable of being as good as them, but people who use assistive technology are just as capable of being as good or even better.

ReplyDeleteI researched prosthetic arms and legs. I read about their history, and their advancements over the years. I think one of the most interesting things was learning about how prosthetics have gotten better over the years, and what they could be in the future. I thought that all the different things a prosthetic can do was surprising. Both the arm and the leg were equally beneficial to the user, because both allowed the user to perform the tasks they were able to do with their real appendage.
If I had a prosthetic arm or leg, I think I would feel happy. I’d be happy because I would have the use of my arm or leg back. I think the prosthetic would help me by allowing me to do things I wasn’t able to do before. I think there are many people who look at someone with a prosthetic as a strange person. Lots of other people would stare at them, or their prosthetic.

ReplyDeleteWhat I found was the most surprising thing of my research on assistive technology is that so much people world-wide depend on assistive technology devices. What’s most interesting is that these people can keep up just like anyone else. Assistive technology keeps these people organized, or able to communicate properly, or able to move from one place to another. It even helps children in schools every day.
One assistive technology device that I think is most beneficial is TapToTalk. TapToTalk is sort of like an application that a child with say autism can have on a Nintendo DS, iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone. This helps kids communicate properly if they have trouble. If any child saw another one with and iPad or any of the other devices where one can get TapToTalk, no one think much of it. NO one would really frown or stare.
I thought that the technology Brainport where you can see things using glands in your tongue was very interesting. It seemed like it wouldn't be possible. I guess it just shows how much technology is improving these days. It seems very beneficial to users because they can now make things out that they could not see at all before. If I had to use assistive technology, I think that I would be pretty upset, but I would try my hardest to live my life like any other teenager. I would also get a lot of help from the technology so that it would be as hard to focus in school, hang out with friends, etc. People that have to use assistive technology usually get started at by strangers and others may make fun of them in school which is something that would be very hard. Kids just need to know that it is what is on the inside that counts. <3

ReplyDeleteWhile researching different forms of assistive technology, there were many various types of technology that were quite interesting to me. The most interesting type of assistive technology that I came across was the voice recognition system and the optical character recognition system. The voice recognition system will take mumbled or slurred words and make them into whole, complete words. The optical recognition system (OCR) will read words that may be misspelled and will retype them so whole words. These different forms of assistive technology will mainly benefit those who are blind. The most beneficial form of assistive technology would probably be a flashing alarm system. This form of assistive technology is also a form of a security system. It is used for people who are deaf and it will let the deaf person know when someone is here and it can also protect them.
If I had to use assistive technology, it would definitely be a change. But since technology is becoming more modern, it allows the user to be more independent. There are many text-to-voice systems that allow people to read and all public places have to also be accessible to those who might be blind or who have a wheelchair. Certain assistive technology for disabled people will help them with listening, math, organization and memory, reading, and writing skills and will work great in schools and work places. Thanks to assistive technology, people don’t have to feel so dependent because it allows them to accomplish things on their own.

ReplyDeleteI found many great assistive technology's over the past few days while researching. The most interesting one was being able to drive when you’re blind. Virginia Tech students made a car that tells you when to turn and when to go faster or slow down. A vibrating seat called SpeedStrip, tells you whether to speed up or slow down depending on what part of the seat vibrates. Gloves with tiny vibrating motors, called DriveGrip, lets you know what to do with the steering wheel. This setup is similar to a person sitting in the passenger seat saying “Turn left! Slow down!” The next challenge their facing is trying to develop a non-visual interface that allows you to make an independent decision. The most surprising one was the app on the iPad for people with autism. It lets the express their feelings and real knowledge with people. This device hooks up to a little stuffed animal robot that looks like a big, blue, fluffy animal. This has a prerecorded voice box run by therapist who can talk to you. The robot has features that can change its expressions to sad, happy and angry. The third technology that I discovered and think is the most beneficial to users is a fire alarm for deaf people. When you’re deaf you have a limited ability to take quick action and escape during a fire emergency. This technology saves hundreds of lives every year. The device has a strobe light attached to it and you can see it where ever you are in your home. There also is a cord that hooks up to your bed so that when you’re sleeping it vibrates and awakes you so you can get out safely. If I had to use these devices in my everyday life, I would be thankful. It could help me in so many ways. If I was blind and I could drive I would think that it’s the most amazing thing ever. In my home the smoke detector and the app would help me too. With the smoke detector I would feel safer at night and throughout the day and with my app I could express my feelings and feel happy and more like a normal person. If I used these I think people would stare and make fun of me. They don’t know though how much they go through and how difficult their life is.
Wouldn't be as hard**
ReplyDeleteLast week, I had to research assistive technology and I found a lot of interesting information about the different types of technology created to help those with disabilities and adversities in their lives. One of the most interesting types of technology that I researched was the Brailler. It connects to a computer the same way a regular printer would. A person with seeing problems would then input information in a computer using a keyboard and print out the text on paper using the Brailler. The Brailler would translate the information from regular letters to Braille using small needle type objects to put indents in the paper. A blind person could then take the paper out and then read it because it would be like any other Braille they read before. There were many types of technologies that I was very surprised to learn about and I didn’t think that something that complex could ever be made. One of these was a device which enabled a deaf person to experience music by placing their fingers on vibration pads and the pad would send different vibrations and pitches through their fingers to they could literally feel the music. I think one of the most beneficial assistive technologies is a text-to-speech scanner. This allows blind people to hear the words of anything instead of reading them. If I had to use the technologies that I researched, I think they would definitely be beneficial to me. I could do some of the things that normal people could do with ease. I think that some feel as if people that have problems and need to use assistive technologies are not as good as them, or feel that they are below people who don’t have to use them. People would look at a person that is blind and think to themselves that they are better than that person because they are whole and can see. People who have to use the assistive technologies are definitely frowned upon by some societies which I think is wrong because they are just using what they can to lead normal lives.
ReplyDeleteHailey Burns- Assistive technology-January 9th
ReplyDeleteLast week I learned a lot about assistive technology, what it is and the different types out there. One of the most interesting things I found was an Optacon. It works like this; the blind person places his/her index finger tactile array. The Optacon user moves the camera across a line of print, a letter space is transmitted. The tiny metal rods, each of which can be vibrated, are vibrated to the corresponding black parts of the image. As the user moves the lens along the print line, images of print letters are felt moving across the rods under the user's finger. What was most surprising to me about this was that the person can read the vibrations to say. This technology would also be most beneficial because there is so many things that we read during the day we don’t even realize it, or how blessed we are. But for someone that is blind, they are now able to read important documents, letters, birthday cards and bills. If I had to use assistive technology I think I would realize even more how beneficial and important it can be in many people’s lives. The technology would also be able to help me many ways at school. I would be able to read the handouts, walk, hear, and most importantly understand what is happening around me. Though there is a down fall for people who use assistive technology, many are stared at, frowned at and even laughed at. It can be embarrassing for people. And many people get these reactions wherever they go. But for people that don’t use assistive technology you have to realize it is not there choose to use it really they need it. They or you need to understand it, never judge them for using it because at anytime they could be needing assistive technology in their life.
I think the most interesting assistive technology that I researched is the text-to-speech (TTS). TTS is what Stephen Hawking uses to communicate. The most surprise is that they have had hearing aids for a long time but they were never very practical, they were very large and had a large battery to go with them. The most beneficial assistive technology that I research would have to be prosthetics. Prosthetics are use for a lot of things. You can have arms, legs, feet, and hands. I think that they help the most because if you lose a limb they can pretty much replace it.
ReplyDeleteI think that if I had to use the assistive technologies that I researched it would be different. If I lost my voice completely then I would have to use TTS to talk to people and that would not be easy in school. I think having a hearing aid would not be too bad as long as I still could hear. The thing I think that would be the hardest to do would be to have a prosthetic leg or arm. If I had a fake arm I could have to learn to write with my other arm. When people use assistive technology I think that they are usually stared at or looked at funny. Most people look at them because they do not see it every day.

ReplyDeleteWhile researching assistive technology, I found out that there are multiple forms of assistive technology. What was the most interesting to me was that it came in so many forms and some of the forms I didn’t know were forms of assistive technology. The most surprising to me was that hearing aids were a form of assistive technology I just thought it was a tool that could be used for the hearing impaired, or blind, and that it was like a wheelchair or a cane, I didn’t know that any of the helping tools for impaired people were assistive technology. I didn’t have a main term for it. The technology that is most important is Augmentative/alternative communication because it is the assistive technology that supports a child who cannot speak or whose speech is not understood by others to communicate. Some of the tools include, picture boards, voice output communication devices, communication software and computers. Based on the technology that I researched, I would feel okay because I have all the technology for me to fit in and be like everyone else. And it could help me understand everything and make me able to be in school like everyone else and not a different individual. The technology I researched, a lot of people stare but because they are amazed, and also because maybe they feel bad for this person.
The most interesting thing I found when researching assistive technology was the Optacon. This technology helped the blind read things off a piece of paper. I don’t know how I would feel if I had to use this technology but I think I would possibly be happy that I had the opportunity to ‘read’ a book by myself, but I think I’d also get a little frustrated knowing people could do things I would never be able to do like physically see the paper. It could help people in everyday life because then they could do things like read anything that is on a piece of paper without the help of others. Sometimes when people look at other people using assistive technology they call them names or make fun of them.
