What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up

We are going to start working on a project that will involve careers and what you want to do with yourself when you leave BHS.

Many of you already have a pretty good idea of what you want to do after high school and college. Many of you have already set a goal to attend a specific college. Some of you have no clue yet.

We are going to be doing some research into specific careers and the education/training reqired for the career. In addition, we will be looking at salaries and compensation for the careers. We will also look at the cost associated with getting the education and training for a career.

There will be an extra credit assignment associated with this project. More details to come later.

In this blog posting you are to discuss the specific career that you want to pursue. If you don't know what you want to do then you are to respond with a career that you are curious about. In other words, everyone MUST respond to this blog posting with a well thoughout response. You are not going to get a 'get out of jail free card' because you say you don't have any idea of what career you want to pursue.

So respond to the following prompts: (DO THIS BEFORE YOU DO ANY RESEARCH) - this is just your first impressions of the career.
What career do you want to pursue (if you don't know or you are not sure then you are to respond with a career that is of most interest to you).
What additional schooling and/or training will you need after high school? Be specific about the type of degree you would need after high school.
What do you expect your annual starting salary to be in this career?
Describe what you think the duties of this career would be on a typical day?
Describe what you think the working conditions of this career would be? (for instance: outside work, weekend work, shift work, working holidays, dealing with the public, dealing with danger, etc)
Do you think there will be any chance for advancement in this career? If so, what?

NO ONE is allowed to not respond because you don't know what you want to do. NO ONE is allowed to choose a professional athlete, actor, singer, etc. That's because you will need something to fall back on.

When I am older I want to be an interior designer. After high school I will most definitely need to go to college. I am not quite sure what degree I will need but I have a feeling I would need some type of degree in marketing and design. I think my annual starting salary will be between $35,000 and $60,000 a year. I think the duties of this job on a typical day would be going to a clients space and coming up with designs and their interests. I think the working conditions for this job would be working all week with a one day break and not working on the holidays. I would definitely be dealing with the public and their thoughts. I think there could be a chance for advancement in this career. I could one day be doing a hotel, or a business building. There is definitely and chance.

The career that I would like to possibly pursue after high school is becoming an orthodontist. In order to be able to go into this field of employment I will need to first finish high school, then college for about four years, and after that some type of dental or orthodontics schooling which I think can be anywhere from 2 to 4 years depending. The salary of orthodontists is usually around 100,000 dollars a year but adds up more and more with the years of experience and number of patients along with the quality of work that you give them. A typical day would start in the morning where I would just see patient after patient putting on braces, taking off braces, and everything that goes along with it. I would be working inside an office all day interacting with humans, adults and children. I’m not really sure if any advancement would take place in this career but it is possible for new types of ways of getting straighter and healthier teeth.

I want to pursue being a doctor. I need like ten years of college after high school to receive a doctorates degree in order to be a doctor. I expect my annual starting salary to be at least $100,000. On a typical day I think my duties are to take care of patients, check up on patients, and participate on surgeries and other procedures. I think the working conditions will be, dealing with the public, being exposed to diseases and infections, being inside, not working most weekends, and holidays off. I don’t really think there is much chance for advancement, other than raises and bonuses once I start doing it for a while.

When I get out of Bedford High School I want to be a lawyer. I’m not positive as to what type of lawyer but as of right now, I’m thinking about a criminal lawyer. In order to become a lawyer you need at least 4 years of college. You need a J.D degree which covers all of the law related fields. As for my salary, it might have to start off lower because I plan to work for myself. I don’t like to take other peoples orders. So my salary will depend on how many people will want to risk their cases with a new lawyer and what my rates will be. I will probably make my salary around $125-$200 an hour, maybe a little less depending on the economy. So that would range between $45,625 and 73,000 per year. The duties of this career will be stressful and will take work and commitment. With this career I will definitely need to deal with the public and as for hours, it will be a pretty much all day job. There is definitely a chance of advancement in this career. I could potentially become a judge or even become a better lawyer and make twice as much or more than what I started off making.

I don't know what career I want to pursue. Obviously everybody has a dream. Thats my first choice. A good backup for that would have to be a police officer or a state trooper. There is a TV show called Alaska State Troopers. Good show and really informational. Police officers would be a good choice for me because I hate sitting around doing nothing. I would love to work in the field like you do in this job. It is a pretty dangerous job though. I have seen alot of violence and disrespect that people give to officers. People don't like laws and want to do whatever you want. Sadly there is a lot of paperwork to go with it, but as long as I get some acto=ion, I will be ok. I would also like to be a prison guard. Being the tough guy in a rough area is always a good thing. I like watching shows about prison guards and stuff. It seems interesting.
To be a officer, you need at least a 4 year degree from a college mostly based in criminal justice. Also you need to learn how to use a gun, learn the rules of the road, traffic rules and regulations, times and places. You have to be pretty smart and wise in this job. One slip, and you can get killed. Annual salary for a police officer is anywhere from $45000-125000. Typical days are at the office, doing paperwork. but you always have to be ready. You could get called in at any moment. This sounds like a cool job.

  6. When I grow up, I want to be an auto mechanic. I will need to be very good at math and know a lot about cars for this job.I will also need to go to a technical college. The average salary for auto mechanic jobs is $36,000. On a typical day, I would have to work on cars, and try to figure out what is wrong with them, and find new parts, etc. The working conditions would mostly be outside, or in a garage at work. It would be a messy job, but I'm going to live on a lake when I grow up so I can just jump in after work. I probably would have weekends and holidays off. There will always be new advances in cars and other technology so there will definitely be advancements in this career.

  7. I want to be a vet technician or vet. After high school, I would need to go to a school that has vet courses like North Carolina State University. I would need a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. The standard starter salary is about 44,000-90,000 dollars. On a typical day. I would expect check ups and giving animals annual vaccines and occasional surgeries. I think I would want to work at an animal clinic, so it would be inside, unless I want to be a large animal vet where you make house calls. It could be dangerous at times if you work with dangerous animals. You can always improve in this business and be a self employed vet and start your own business.I think it would be more of a hobby than a job because it's something I look forward to.

I don’t exactly know what I would like to do after high school. I’d like to attend the University of Michigan or Akron College to play soccer. I do not know what I would like to be my major. I’d like it to be something to deal with math. Maybe accounting? I have not given to much thought to this. If I took up accounting as my major then I would probably need at least a bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or a related field. Many accountants and auditors choose to obtain certification to help advance their careers, such as becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). I would have guessed this job would pay a good deal of money, but as I researched more I realize the price range is quite varied. Salary may be lower than $30,000/yr all the way up to over $100,000/yr. So I would take a guess that the more schooling and experience you have, the higher your salary would become. When I think accountant, what comes to mind is hours behind a computer with piles of papers and a calculator. I think of you having a lot of responsibility and your own little cubicle area with dividers and a bunch of others that have the same job. I have figured out through my research that accountants tend to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. Accounting information is very time sensitive and needs to be processed in a timely fashion. Also, much accounting work requires individuals to work as a team. This helps in the completion of projects as well as the spreading of knowledge between team members. With accounting constantly changing and since it covers such a varied amount of complex topics, there is no way one person can know everything there is to know about the subject. This would be why teamwork to complete a task is very effective. I think there is a very good chance of advancement. I found out that you are practically coached through advancements. In public accounting, junior accountants become senior accountants, and senior accountants become managers, and so on. Just as one would think, pay increases with every promotion. Many times you advance with hard work and seniority.

  9. I have gone back and forth with what I want to be when I grow up but I think I am going to stick with what I enjoy doing more and that’s working/ helping out kids. I have always wanted to be a teacher but not just any teacher; I want to become a special education teacher. Some additional schooling will be needed if I want my Doctorates degree but I could just get out of school with a Masters. For me to become a special education teacher I have to go through 5 years of College, and I have to student teach in a special education class with a certified special education teacher assisting me. To be able to teach special education you have to be patient, organized, a good motivator, and understanding. The salary is fairly good for teaching special education, you make $51,340 a year and you also get the holidays, summer, and closing/delays off. When looking at colleges for this career you can basically go to any school so I am hoping to go to Ohio State University or University of Michigan on a scholarship. With this job I would have to expand my creativity that way it would fit everyone’s different learning style. Overall I feel that this is the job for me and I am very confident in my decision!

A career that I would like to purse is to be a physical therapist. For this job I would need to graduate high school and take six to seven years of college to get my degree. I would have to get my Bachelors degree and I could also get a Master’s and Doctorate degree. I expect a starting salary to be around $60,000. On a typical day I would have therapy sessions with patients and would have to decide what exercises would be best for my patient to do. I believe that I would be working inside a facility with heat/air conditioning, and that I would get holidays off and would work a five day week. I would be dealing with the public but I would not be dealing with anything dangerous. Also there is a chance for advancement in this career. As a physical therapist you could specialize in a specific part of the body, for example the back or hands.

When I get out of High School, I would liketo persue a career in nursing. The specific career I would like to persue is a Pediatrician. To even be a pediatrician you need to have 4 years of high school, 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 1 year of a pediactrics internship and 2 years of a pediactrics residency. I think my starting salary would be about $350 a week or more. The duties of the job would probably be to go check the kids sickness and perscribe them medicine they can use to cure the illness. I think the work conditions will be indoor working with the public and working on holidays and working extra shifts. If there is an advancement of the job it would probably be going to be a nurse at a hospital.

  13. The career that I would like to pursue in is Psychiatric Care. The schools I would like to attend would be either Ohio State University or Michigan State University. The schooling that I would need to be able to become a psychiatric nurse is four years of college to get my bachelors degree, and then I would have to become a Registered Nurse (RN) which takes two to three years of schooling. My starting salary for this career would be $60,000 a year. The duties of this career on a typical day would be asses mental health needs, help patients regain or improve their coping abilities and assist patients with self-care activities. The working conditions would be hospitals, outpatient facilities, and long-term care facilities.

  14. I would like to pursue the career of physical therapy. Though to get there I would have to continue school to college and get a masters degree to be good at what I do. I would expect that the annual starting salary for this job would be around 75,000. The duties of this career are to be good with people your job is to work with people. Each day a typical day would be helping people regain strength in their muscles because of injury. Also trying to find out the reason for peoples they have why doing sport or daily activities. The conditions would be indoors, most likely on Saturdays, dealing with the public and by a pool. The career I want to pursue the most is definitely something in the law enforcement field. I think I want to be a crime scene investigator. I’ll need a lot of training in government and criminal law in college, as well as some sciences and forensic trainings. So probably a bachelor’s degree in those would be good. The annual pay for a crime scene investigator is normally $40,000to $70,000, which isn’t a lot but I wouldn’t be poor. The duties of one day as a CSI agent are to show up at a crime scene and record statements from witnesses and record evidence and basically take notes on anything that went on during the crime from the evidence. Then they would go back to the building and process the evidence and pretty much try to figure out who committed the crime and catch them. The working conditions wouldn’t be too great and I would have to climb, crawl, and walk around the crime scene and be able to handle blood or gross things. I would work outside a lot and be in a lot of danger when trying to find the criminals. I would expect to be called to a scene at any time, even on weekends and holidays. There could be a little room for advancement such as leading the investigation team.

I want to be an Anesthesiologist. In order to become an Anesthesiologist in the US, it would take, at a minimum, 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, a 1 year internship, and generally 3 years of residency to become an Anesthesiologist in all 12 years of schooling post high school. On an annual basis the median Anesthesiologists salary is $166,400. The lowest 10% earn $115,470 per year while the upper 10% earn more than $200,000 per year. On daily basis anesthesiologists give patients anesthetics to put them to sleep during procedures. This is a very demanding career that does not let you have very many days off. Also this job is vital and dangerous because you have the lives of other people in your hands. As an anesthesiologist there is not much room for advancement.

  17. When i grow up i would like to be a physical theapist. I will have to go to college for a minimum of 8 years and i will need a doctorate degree to be a physical theapist. I think my annual basis is about $125,000.I think a good paycheck would be about $350 a week. Being a physical theapist would help many people and would give exams. Also i would be able to help family members.I do not think that there is much room for advancement. You may not get very many days off because if a patient really needs me i should be able to go and help them. Because i am the one that commited to this job.

When I grow up, I don’t exactly know what I want to be, but if I had to pick anything it would be a venture capitalist. This is simple because I find it interesting. I would have to complete High School and then go to a University for 4 years and major in Business. Some career’s I find interesting are office manager, communications specialist, and administrative assistant. I think as my high school career goes on I can find out better what career path I want to follow. But overall I want to go into a career that revolves around business.

I would like to pursue being an athletic trainer for a collegiate/professional team. To get to this level, I would have to graduate from high school and would have to earn at least a Bachelor’s degree (a major’s degree is recommended.) This would take about 4-6 years of college education. If I got the job of an athletic trainer, the average starting salary would be about $27,000 to $30,000 a year. On a day on the job, I would have to warm up, stretch, and aid them if needed. I would need to apply pre-game and post-game treatments for injured players. I would also have to watch matches for anything unusual with the players’ conditions. Working conditions include working evenings and weekend because that is often when sporting events are held. If I’d work for a team, I would often have to travel with the team. Being an athletic trainer also would require being physically fit. Some advancements of the job is becoming assistant athletic trainer to head athletic trainer. Trainers could also switch from team to team, or move into sales and marketing positions.
